(*)We use meteorologic data from our meteorological station in Destnice near Saaz. 30-years average (1981 – 2010) according to Czech Hydrometeorological Institute is being used as long-term average. (Up to 2016 the 1961 – 1990 average has been used.)

Comment:

The average temperature in May was nearly the same as in 2019, reaching 11,5°C, what is 3 degrees less than the long-term average. As to the precipitation May was above the long-term average, but majority of rainfalls (68%) came within 3 days - 10., 11. and 23.5.. The state of hop soil as to the water capacity was good in general. First and second hop training was done in good quality. All spring works including cultivation and fertilizing were finished successfully by the end of May. Towards the end of the month the hop plants reached the 2 - 3 meters of height on majority of the area. The health state of hop growth is good. Two sprayings against downy mildew and pests were done. Hop aphid started to fly from winter hosts at the end of May. Under condition of predicted warm weather the monitoring and protection against hop aphid and red spider mite will be fundamental for keeping the good health state of hops. This year for the first time the project of so called "clever hop garden" will help us to fight against downy mildew. There are 45 measuring stations involved into this project. Their task is to collect data about temperature and moisture directly in hop gardens. Evaluation of collected data indicates the best time for necessary spraying against fungus diseases. Spring works are considered to be well done, however due to the measures against spreading of COVID-19 the costs of temporary workers increased and therefore the costs of production went up as well.
