May of this year was above average in the Žatec hop-growing region. The long-term average is 14.2°C, this year´s May average temperature reached 15.3°C. Unfortunately, this May was the driest in terms of precipitation in the last ten years. It rained only 21.8 mm, which is less than half of the long-term average of 52.0 mm. The course of the weather allowed the rapid progress of spring works in hop gardens. The training of hop shoots on hop wires and the first hilling were completed a week earlier than last year. At the end of the month, hop plants reached a height of 2-3 m. On the farms of the TOP HOP group, seasonal workers did spring works well. Protective spraying against alfalfa snout weevil and also two sprays against hop downy mildew were carried out. Irigation systems are ready for use in June. In the vilage of Hořesedly on the Chmelex farm, we have started building the irrigation tanks for drip irrigation, however, they will not be available for irrigation until 2023.
