(*)We use meteorologic data from our meteorological station in Destnice near Saaz. 30-years average (1981 – 2010) according to Czech Hydrometeorological Institute is being used as long-term average. (Up to 2016 the 1961 – 1990 average has been used.)


Comment:

Unfortunately, the unfavorable weather for the growth and development of hops continued even in the month of August. The average temperature reached 19.5°C and was therefore 1.2°C above the long-term average, on five days the temperature exceeded 30°C, at the beginning of the month during the hop ripening period it even exceeded 33°C for three days. The dry weather continued, and we did not see the first fruitful rains in the hop fields until August 15th, followed by the next ones on August 21st and August 26th, which means that they did not affect the growth and development of the hops. We started the harvest at TOP HOP Group farms on 20.8.2022. Unfavorable weather conditions this year had a very negative effect on the amount of harvested hops and the content of alpha acids in the cones. This year's harvest will reach approx. 50% compared to 2021, and the average alpha acid content of Saaz semi-early red bine hops in the Saaz area will probably not even reach 3%. The yield of the Saaz semi-early red bine hops in the Saaz area reaches an average of 0.5 - 0.7 t/ha. It is the worst result in the last decade. However, the health condition of the hop cones is good. Hop growers have huge financial losses both from a low harvest and as a result of sharply increased production costs. We hereby ask breweries and buyers of Saaz hops to take into account this extraordinary situation, which the growers did not cause through their own fault.
