(*)We use meteorologic data from our meteorological station in Destnice near Saaz. 30-years average (1981 – 2010) according to Czech Hydrometeorological Institute is being used as long-term average. (Up to 2016 the 1961 – 1990 average has been used.)

Comment:

The month of May was extremely dry from the point of view of total precipitation, only 5.3 mm rained, which is only 10% of the long-term average. This is the driest May in 17 years at our meteorologic station in Deštnice. So far, hops have not suffered from a lack of water thanks to sufficient rainfall in March and April. The second extreme was the amplitude of temperatures during 24 hours, which reached up to 20°C many times a month, which inhibited the growth of hop bines. The temperature differences between day and night caused a delay in hop vegetation, which we estimate around 10 days. The training of the hop shoots onto the hop wires was managed on time and in good quality, even though it took longer time to grow to the required length of hop bines. In the second decade of May, a protective spraying was carried out against downy mildew, hop aphids, and in some places also against alfalfa snout weevil, at the end of May the occurrence of red spider mites was recorded. At the end of May, the hops reached a height of 1.8 - 3.5 m. The health condition of hop plants can be evaluated as good.
