Saint Lawrence in Kounov
Like every year, the hop growing community celebrated St. Lawrence day on August 8th in Kounov. We did not miss the chance to take part in this traditional event.
Saint Lawrence has long been the patron of hop growers and his name day is celebrated on August 10th in the Czech Republic. The tradition of St. Lawrence day says that it is not wise to enter hop gardens during this day, because he is in there helping the plants bloom. This part of August corresponds with the vegetative period of second flowering, and any disturbance is said to negatively affect the final harvest.
This year the event was organised by PROBIOS a.s., one of the major Czech hop growing companies, which takes care of roughly 140 hectares of hop gardens.
Where are we going to meet next year? We will see, however we are looking forward already.
